Living in Kamloops, far from any surf spots, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to go surfing on multiple occasions in many different locations. My first experience with ocean waves was at the age of 12 in Oceanside California. On a family road trip to Disneyland I discovered that the natural attractions at the beach can be more appealing than the manufactured hype of theme parks. I learned a respect for the powerful and tumultuous force as I was tossed and turned, overwhelmed by panic, disoriented and dragged under by the crashing crushing currents. I was in awe as watched locals riding the waves on boogie boards. Inspired, I innovated with an improvised wave rider concocted from a cooler lid. Euphoric with endorphins, I became addicted to the adrenaline rush.
I have had the chance to go surfing in Hawaii, the birthplace of the activity. While backpacking around Europe, I took advantage of surf spots like Hossegor and Biarritz, France. While travelling around Africa, I was compelled by many beautiful surf breaks including Jeffrey’s Bay. In New Zealand I checked out Raglan, made famous by the surf movie “Endless Summer”. Back in Canada, Tofino the chill waves did not disappoint. I scouted waves in Costa Rica on Google Maps and was very happy with Playa Grande. Most recently, I was able to surf on the Galapagos Islands alongside reef sharks and marine iguanas.
A couple of years ago I did a trip to Barbados for the express purpose of relaxing with a casual surf spot. I took some lessons and dedicated time to see significant improvement. The next surfing safari will be in Mexico, where I have had successful surf sessions in the past. Sayulita is a perfect spot for beginners, long boarders, and fun, friendly waves.
