Description

Step off the beaten path and explore one of the most fascinating corners of the Kamloops landscape on an evening adventure to Tranquille Creek. Try your hand at gold panning, keep watch for local birds and wildlife, and as the sun begins to disappear, search the warm rocks and grasslands for one of the area’s most intriguing residents—the western rattlesnake.

Tranquille Creek has a remarkable history. Gold was discovered in the area in the 1850s, helping draw prospectors to the Thompson region during the early days of British Columbia’s gold rush. Gold dredging was even carried out near the mouth of Tranquille Creek in 1901. Today, visitors can experience a little of that prospecting history by learning the basics of gold panning and seeing what the creek might reveal. Just remember: gold panning is only permitted in designated areas, as portions of the Tranquille area are protected.

The area is also steeped in more recent history. Nearby Tranquille Sanatorium opened in 1907 as the King Edward Memorial Sanatorium, one of the first tuberculosis sanatoriums in Canada and the first west of Ontario. The isolated location was chosen in part for its fresh air and peaceful setting. At its peak, the sanatorium had hundreds of patients and staff and operated almost like a small self-contained community, with gardens, a farm, school, recreation facilities and other services. It treated tuberculosis patients until 1958 before becoming a mental health institution the following year.

As evening arrives, the landscape takes on a completely different character. Bring your binoculars and look for birds moving through the grasslands and along the creek, then keep your eyes open for snakes warming themselves on rocks and trails. Twilight is an especially atmospheric time to explore, when the heat of the day lingers in the landscape and wildlife activity begins to change.

Kamloops is home to the Western Rattlesnake, one of British Columbia’s most fascinating reptiles. These snakes thrive in the region’s warm, dry grasslands and rocky terrain, where they can often be found basking in the sun or hunting at dusk. Although their reputation can make them seem intimidating, rattlesnakes generally avoid people and play an important role in the local ecosystem by helping control rodent populations. If you encounter one, give it plenty of space and enjoy the sight from a safe distance.

This is more than a gold-panning trip—it’s an opportunity to dig into Kamloops history, explore the grasslands, watch for wildlife and experience Tranquille Creek as the day fades into evening.

Please note: Wildlife sightings, including snakes, are never guaranteed. Guests should observe wildlife from a safe distance and follow all local regulations and environmental guidelines.
